From the Pastor's Desk:

June is here. At last we can plant our gardens with some expectation of success. My parents never planted until the first weekend in June and even then their garden would occasionally freeze out. We have such a short growing season that I am always surprised at the abundant variety of fruit and vegetables that are produced here.

Pentecost is behind us now, and we enter once again into the prolonged green season that the Church names as Ordinary Time. We remember that Ordinary does not mean usual, uneventful or boring. Ordinary means during this time the Ordinal of the Church remains more in focus. This means that we emphasize the parts of worship that remain unchangeable day to day.

This year our Gospel readings during Ordinary Time are focused on the Gospel of Mark. The authorship of Mark is unknown, although, it is commonly held that Mark, the Gospeler, was probably John Mark. You will recall that John Mark traveled with Paul and Barnabas for a while and then returned to Jerusalem. John Mark, a young man, was the cousin of Barnabas as recounted in the Book of Acts. Scholarship suggests that Mark’s Gospel may contain the summary of much of Peter’s teaching. This Gospel is the shortest gospel and the earliest. The writing of Mark is dated from 60-65 AD before the Jewish revolt that began in 66 AD and the destruction of the Temple of Jerusalem in 70 AD.

Mark’s gospel is written as a series of episodes that are often connected with the word “immediately” (as in: “immediately” Jesus did this and then “immediately" Jesus did that). Mark also often changed tenses within a sentence, which added to the rapid flow. As a result, Mark’s gospel is not just a theological work, it is a fast-paced, engaging account of our Lord’s life on earth.

And coming back to earth, here are a few June events to remember. Sunday, June 14, the Stewardship Committee will host a Per-Capita Breakfast following worship. All are welcome to enjoy some home cooking and learn a little more about per capita, its history, why we do it and why it is helpful to see per capita as a separate giving.

June 26 and 27 will be the Presbytery gathering in Vancouver, WA. Starting in June and for the next year we will be eligible to have two Elder commissioners attend and vote at Presbytery. I strongly urge you to consider participating. This is our unique church government in action, and we need your vote and commitment to the larger church. Think about it, pray about it, and join me there.

In Christ’s Name,
Rich†

Per-Capita Breakfast

Stewardship “Per-Capita breakfast” will be served following services on June 14th. Bring your appetite and a friend and learn about per-capita giving!

Presbytery Meeting

REMEMBER: The second meeting of the Cascades Presbytery for 2009 will be held in Vancouver, WA the weekend of June 26 and 27. We need to send two commissioners to represent us at this important gathering. From June 2009- March 2010, First Presbyterian Church is allowed two commissioners to be present for these meetings. Pastor Rich and Marsha will be attending as representatives of their respective concerns, but we need two people to represent the church congregation, they must be Elders. Please give this careful and prayerful consideration, thank you.

Keeping the Church Beautiful!

Summer is fast approaching and spring is certainly upon us, a time for flowers and lawn mowing and getting out in the fresh air for some exercise and beautification. Keep in mind that the church is in need of TLC also, Mike Sabin will be heading up a committee (yet to be formed) that will take on that pressing issue of keeping our church grounds tended to and blooming. If you can give a week end day towards this project or commit for the season, please do so and plan to bring your children. To get involved and volunteer please call Mike Sabin at 947-4485.

Thank You, Bev Clause…. (Submitted by Jim Ogle)
Bev Clause donated a cook book to the church library that was compiled by the Ladies Aid Society of the First Presbyterian Church of Lakeview. There is no date on the book; however, the Ladies Aid Society organized the First Presbyterian Church of Lakeview. The book was in Maude Bennett’s, (Bev’s mother), recipe file. SOME THOUGHTS ABOUT STEWARDSHIP

Our giving is a way of sharing with others some of God’s gifts to us. Stewardship is utilized to proclaim the gospel and to reach out to those in need in our church.

Generally, the three most common examples of stewardship are as follows:
· Pledging – This is the total amount of your undesignated giving over a period of a year. This is the way that most congregations give.
· Payment of Per Capita – Each year the Presbytery establishes an amount per active member in the church so all Presbyterians share in the necessary costs of the administrative functions of the Presbytery. This year the per capita amount is $22.55.
· Directed Giving – This type of giving allows a member to give to specific project of the church or Presbytery,

Reminder: Join us at the Stewardship Per Capita Breakfast on June 14 to learn more.
